Have you ever gone to get a cup of coffee (or anything) only to realize that when you poured your cup, you got nothing? Sadly, there is nothing left. The supply is depleted, gone and dried up. Oh, what a disappointment when you are craving something and it’s not there.
Consider for a minute that you are that coffee pot. You have been pouring yourself into so many things. Problems, jobs, people, worries and daily life have little by little consumed all your resources. You are totally dried up. You may have lost your joy and feel discouraged or weary. Maybe your motivation is suddenly gone. You can’t give another ounce of yourself because you are empty.
I have been there and I can honestly say this a very real struggle for me.
It is fair to say that we can dry up before we know it. Then suddenly we don’t have anything else to give to anyone or anything. Our soul becomes empty and thirsty.
We may reach the point where we are going through the motions but feeling so far away from God. I recently had a conversation with someone who was struggling with this very thing. Sometimes we need to stop and see what is draining our resources. When we do that, we can pause for a moment and ask God to direct us. (Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God…”)
So, how do we get filled back up? We go to the source, our Savior.
In John 4, we read the story of the Samaritan woman who met Jesus while she was looking for a drink. However, Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” She was looking to quench her thirst elsewhere, but Jesus told her to drink of the Living Water and she would never thirst again.
I have included the words to an old song, “Fill My Cup Lord”. If you read the lyrics you will find truth. Jesus is the well that will never run dry. All we need to do is go to Him and ask Him to renew and refill our cup.
Once our cup is full, then we will once again experience joy, rest and peace.
Fill My Cup Lord
Like the woman at the well
I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy
And then I heard my Savior speaking
“Draw from My well that never shall run dry”Fill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of Heaven, feed me ’til I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me wholeThere are millions in this world
Who are craving
The pleasures, earthly things of gold
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my LordFill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of Heaven, feed me ’til I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole
Today, I want to challenge you to go to the Living Water, get into His Word and allow Him to fill your cup. Every day we need a fresh, filled cup.
O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

Fun fact: “Fill My Cup Lord” was the first song I ever sang in front of the church was in high school and sang with one of my youth friends.
I said it then and continue to say it now, I am not a singer, but I love to sing!
