Napkin Toss

I love when God gives me an object lesson!

When we go on a long road trip I like to pack an ice chest filled with fruit, drinks, snacks and sandwich stuff. I also take a roll of paper towels and wet wipes. A few years ago we were preparing to leave and I realized I was out of paper towels, so I went to my napkin stash. You know the leftovers from every party you’ve ever had? I found napkins for every occasion and in every color. Wow, it was like I had found a treasure trove. I was so happy that I had not tossed all those leftovers and had held on to them.

I wonder how many useful things we disregard or set aside from God’s Word.

We go to church and Bible Study and listen to the preacher and teacher, but do we really store away what we hear for later or do we just disregard it thinking we don’t need it? Just like the napkins that were leftover, what we hear today may be something we need many years from now.

When we have God’s Word stored in our heart we will be able to retrieve it just when we need it most. It may be at a time when we are struggling with sin, challenges of life, trying to help or counsel someone else that God’s Word will be recalled.

So today, I want to challenge you in two ways. First, begin to memorize scripture. Soak it up. Meditate on it. Write it down. Then, ask God to penetrate your heart with His Word. Ask Him to reveal the Truth that you need to hear.

“Your Word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11

But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

As a reminder, when you read and store the Word of God, you are enjoying the blessed fellowship with the Living God.
