When I was a youth, we sang a lot of different choruses that were straight from God’s Word. I can remember the sweet times, sitting by a bonfire or fireplace with our Bibles in hand, singing from the pages of scripture. Those choruses come to mind as I read certain passages and then I sing them all day long. Those choruses also served as a tool in memorizing scripture.
Scripture memorization is one of the most important things you can do in your spiritual journey. When you fill your heart and mind with God’s Word you become equipped and empowered to face the things you encounter each day. It is like a precious hidden gem that resurfaces when you least expect it.
Your mind and heart become infiltrated by what you fill them with. If you have a constant diet of worldly things and pleasures, then you will think and act worldly. However, when you fill your mind and heart with the things of God, then you will think and act more Christ like.
Your mind and heart are soaking up whatever you expose them to. God says in His Word that you need to set your affection, your love, your desires on the things above, the things that are Christ centered.
In Colossians, Paul reminds the Christians to seek those the things which are above, not earthly things. Set your mind and heart on the things eternal. When you surrender your heart to Christ, you die to self and your life is hidden with Christ, which means you belong to Him.
Do a spiritual inventory today. What are you seeking? What is infiltrating your mind and heart? When is the last time you memorized a Bible verse? If you have trouble memorizing scripture, then make up a tune and sing it. It doesn’t matter if you can sing, it’s a love song between you and God.
This passage is one of the first choruses I learned by singing. Today, when I read it I can’t help but sing it.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3
