Prayer for a Train

We had just moved from East Texas to Southeast Texas. We had looked at a couple of places to live, at night. We were excited about the place we had picked. As you know, moving is hard! After a long day of moving and getting settled in for bed, we were sure we would all get a good night’s rest.

We were all sound asleep and around 2:00 a.m. it was as if the house began to shake. The most fierce noise we had ever heard woke us all up. To our surprise, there was a train track right across the street. We honestly had missed that detail somehow or just ignored it until that very moment. It was like a moment from an old I Love Lucy script, some of you know what episode I’m talking about.

The train schedule actually stayed consistent. Every morning at the same time it would pass by. My daughter would wake up every night. Needless to say we were all getting a little fatigued. We finally decided to do something about it. We prayed! We asked the Lord to please change the schedule or not let us hear it again at night.

And….we never heard it again.

This may seem like a silly thing, but to us it was a big thing. And what a lesson to our children. At that moment we taught them to pray and trust the Lord, even with something like a train.  I’m not sure if the train actually stopped coming or if we just stopped hearing it. Either way, it was an answer to prayer.

God really does care about the little details of life.

Today you may have a need you have prayed about for a long while. God sees, knows and cares what you are going through. He is always present, listening and answering.

Maybe you have reached a point where you want to give up or think that God isn’t hearing you. These times of silence and waiting are blessings in disguise. It is during these times that your faith grows through patience.

Look at Sarah and Abraham. They waited for 25 years for a baby. Then, only as God can do, they were blessed with Isaac. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90. It was laughable to think they would be parents at their age. But God through His infinite wisdom blessed them at just the right time. Sarah was well past childbearing age and thought it would be impossible for her to have a child. What looked impossible to her was possible with God.

And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” Genesis 18:13-14

Today, I want to encourage you to not give up and don’t stop praying. God is working on your behalf and He will answer in the absolute right time. There may be needs that only God knows and maybe you’re still waiting for an answer. Remember, nothing is too hard for Him.

Use this time of waiting as a time of growth. God will grow you as you patiently wait for His timing and His answer. He is at work and He can handle it. Keep the faith and don’t think God is ignoring you because you’ve yet to see the answer.

Fun fact: These are our 3 little grandjoys, they are quite the handful. I cannot imagine being parents to little ones at my age. I can understand why it was laughable for Abraham and Sarah.

Read Genesis 17-18 for the whole story.
