A Friend in Jesus

As we were enjoying breakfast in our hotel while on vacation, a young man named Jason, came up and introduced himself and asked us our names. He also asked if we needed prayer because he would pray for us. He proceeded to tell us that Jesus wanted to be our friend. We watched him for a while as he went from table to table and we admired his boldness.

We engaged in conversation with him as he sat with us for a while. The topics ranged from movies, pop culture and church. His intention that day was to go to the beach and tell young people that Jesus wants to be their friend.

The manager of the hotel came by our table and told us thank you for being so nice to this young man. He had previously been kicked out of another hotel for talking to people. He was only there for one night. From our perspective, no thanks was necessary for being kind to someone.

Later that day as we were about our business, selfishly enjoying some rest, we noticed he was doing exactly what he set out to do. We could see him looking for people to tell about Jesus. He was barefoot and determined.

Oh, if only we could all grasp a little bit of what this Jason has. He had been turned away but kept going. He was searching for those that need to hear about a friend named Jesus.

We all long for friendship and we know there is no better friend than Jesus. What a way to open a door for the gospel. We prayed for God to use Jason in some way while he was on mission to share with everyone.

I believe satan tried to discourage this young man and stop him from being about the gospel. I believe God will use him and his heart for the Lord to be a mighty witness in the days ahead.

So, what can we take away from this?

First, most of us encounter people nearly every single day. Start a conversation and ask if there is something you can pray for and assure them you will pray. Maybe they would be open to prayer right then.

Secondly, everyone longs for friendship. Add to that conversation by telling people that Jesus wants to be their friend. You can share how Jesus died, was buried and rose again for them.

Lastly, share about the friend that Jesus has been to you. It is encouraging to the lonely, sad, downtrodden, lost, scared, insecure, and hopeless people to hear how Jesus has been a friend that will stick closer than a brother. (A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Prov. 18:24). There is nothing greater than sharing your own testimony.

That same day as we were touring an old home we saw a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. I was reminded that Jason was sharing the best gift, the gift of Jesus.

Today, be a Jason.

This tree was located at the Moody Mansion.
