You may remember the October 1987 rescue of Baby Jessica from a well in Midland, Texas. She was 18 months old and had fallen into a well in her aunt’s backyard. After 58 hours of being trapped she became free because of all the rescuers that worked around the clock. People everywhere were praying and hoping for a good outcome.
The media coverage kept everyone glued to the television. The nation watched as baby Jessica was rescued. I can remember watching and having tears of joy streaming down my cheeks as they lifted her from the well.
This little girl had been trapped in a dark and desolate place. Can you imagine all the fear that must have overwhelmed that baby plus her parents? That must have been a terrifying time.
Thankfully, Jessica survived. She says that her life is a miracle.
If you are a Christian, then you also have a rescuer, His name is Jesus.
Think about what this means. Jesus came to rescue you from sin. When you gave your life to Him, you were rescued from the eternal consequence of sin, eternal life apart from Christ.
At the moment of rescue, you were delivered. The weight of sin was lifted from you by the blood of Jesus. This doesn’t mean you will never have moments of despair and hopelessness, but it does mean your rescuer will bind you up and keep a steady grip on you.
Satan will try to convince you that you aren’t worthy of rescue, and he will remind you of your past failures or decisions. God wipes the past away; it was gone the very moment you gave your heart to Christ.
”Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new.” II Corinthians 5:17
You may have remembrance of the past, but it cannot have a hold on you.
Today, be thankful that you have been rescued from the pit of hell and that your life is secured by the greatest rescuer of all, Jesus Christ.
“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.” Psalm 40:2
