Not long ago I was going through a particularly difficult time. As we all know, our journeys in life can become difficult at times. As we finished dinner one evening, I felt like I just needed to dive into God’s Word for some encouragement. My husband came into the room and asked what I was reading. I told him I’m just looking for some encouragement. So, being the sweet, kind, loving and encouraging husband-preacher he is, he told me to turn to Psalm 37:25.
As I turned to the passage and began to read, I looked at him and asked, “this is your way of encouraging me?”. He was like what? “Read it to me”, he said.
So, I began to read out loud, “I was young, but now I’m old….”. Really? This is what he thought would make me feel better? What husband tells his wife to turn to scripture that clearly points out the obvious? I do realize that I was young and now I’m old-er, but still…
For those who know us best, you can imagine how the scene unfolded. Quickly the tears turned to laughter, and we discussed appropriate things to say to your wife. My husband knew that this would make me laugh.
Even though the scripture wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, it actually turned what was a difficult moment of tears and sadness into a moment of laughter and smiles. The Bible says that a cheerful heart is good medicine. “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Proverbs 17:22
Finding joy in the journey of life’s trials seems impossible sometimes, but God’s Word offers little doses of encouragement when we need them most. I am so thankful that on a difficult day, God’s Word turned my tears to joy.
We have a Savior that truly loves and cares for us. His Word is a tangible gift that He has given us to offer us laughter, peace, calmness, wisdom, encouragement and love when we need it most.
Today, maybe you need a little dose of medicine from God’s Word. If today isn’t your best day, it’s ok, dive in to see what God has for you. We all need a little help occasionally and there is no better help than what you will find from God alone.
I pray today that you will have a merry heart filled with God’s goodness!

Fun fact: This was taken on Dec. 27, 2024, our 41st Anniversary. He always gives me something to laugh about.
