What does it mean to be content? According to Google, it is a state of happiness and satisfaction. If we are honest we all want to be content, but where do we find that contentment?
We live in a world of instant gratification. If you want something you can most likely have it delivered in a matter of minutes to hours. You can now do all your shopping from home. It is convenient and time saving. However, it can also be a way to try to find contentment in the newest gadget or item. Let’s face it, you can explore so many more cool things online than in the stores.
But, until you are internally content and satisfied, you will never be externally content or satisfied. Nothing you buy or possess will give you contentment. Internal contentment can only come from a relationship with Jesus. It is knowing that Jesus is enough.
The Apostle Paul addresses this in his letter to the Philippians. He was in prison facing an uncertain fate. His circumstances were challenging, but he wanted to encourage others. He acknowledged that he had learned to be content with very little and to be content with plenty. He goes on to say that it is Christ who gives him the strength to be content no matter what circumstances look like.
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:11-13
Circumstances can change in a moment, but Paul is reminding us that being content with Christ is enough no matter what is going on around us.
So today, do you find yourself content? Are you looking for satisfaction externally or internally? Remember, external satisfaction is temporary, but internal satisfaction is eternal.
